Q&A with a Braid Specialist: KSONI X PECKHAM PALMS.

Woman braids customers hair with hair extensions in a box braid style

Read time: 2 mins

In the first of a three conversations with the residents of The Palms in Peckham, we met with Augusta who is a braid specialist and she allowed us to photograph her at work and gave us a pleasant insight in to her work as a hair stylist. A big thank you for letting us share this story with our readers.

Augusta @augusta_hair_beauty  works with masterful skill and finesse and has been doing hair since she was 7 years old. Salons are more than just a place of business, they really are an essential pillar of their respective communities and a highly under-appreciated space. Follow us in our exploration of self care, community and hair care.

When did you

first learn how

to style hair?

"

I learned to style hair from Sierra Leone since I was like 7 years old. I learned very early on because my older sister was a hairdresser so that’s how I learned.

"

What is your favourite

part of being a stylist?

"

I just really like doing hair, I really like to do box braids but the only thing I can't do yet is cut hair and Jamaican styles.

"

What do you think

is the biggest mistake

people make when it comes

to their haircare?

"

Sometimes it's people using the wrong product for their type of hair. I hear customers complaining of their hair being too tight when put in braids. Good braids hold the hair tight but you need someone who knows what they are doing (like me) who knows how to do braids tight but not too tight that it is uncomfortable or damages the hair at the roots.

What is the best

method to maintain

a healthy scalp?

"

Best way is for me, don't let different people style your hair. Find someone who knows your hair and stick with that salon. Don’t use too much heat, treat it and trim it, hydrate it.

"

Do you consider

different hairstyles

for different seasons?

"

Yeah this season is braids; box braids right now, also jumbo braids are really nice!

"

How important is

a salon to a community?

"

It’s important. Just for people to support people and in this community it’s important for people who are black and support each other and push forward.

"

How important is

black ownership to you?

"

I really want to see black people push forward.

Do you consider

sustainability when

choosing the products

you purchase and use?

"

Unfortunately there isn’t much choice on the market. As long as it works and the product is what it says on the package, I will use it. It’s important to know what's inside the bottle.

"

What is your personal

favourite style?

"

Knotless!! Hahaha
Again, Box braids

"

Speaking of self care;

What do you do

to relax and unwind?

"

Just be around people I love.

"

What smells/tastes/

colours/textures/sounds

make you feel like “home”?

"

What always reminds me of home is my hairdressing 'cause I started it at home. A lot of things remind me of home: foods, people, hot weather but doing hair reminds me of home.
